What do you give a teenager for an end of exams gift? “A teenage retreat bedroom makeover of course” – oh yes! I could hear my teenage self screaming in joy - if only my mum was as design savvy and generous as this recent client’s Mum. SO the brief started with the need to suit the family’s newly renovated modern minimalist home. The room needed to project a sense of simplicity and calm that the rest of the home oozed - understated, uncluttered, modern and sleek. It also had to demonstrate a sense of luxury and comfort, with a space for sleep, chilling out, something to reflect her love of guitar and a specially requested make-up zone and hanging chair. I can almost hear my teenage self groaning in jealousy now.
After some detailed briefing sessions with our 16yr old client and her Mum, we settled on an on-trend Scandinavian style, with a muted colour palette and some rose gold highlights to bring the space to life. I also commissioned a local photographer Carrie Young to take some black and white stylised images of my client playing her guitar to use as a piece of artwork for the room. This is the design board that was born from the brief.
And the resulting room install – designed, installed and style by yours truly - Minted Interiors:
To create this minimal calming vibe, I went for a mix of timber, leather and rose gold with grey, white and soft pink. An incredible lighting installation provides an amazing high-end feature piece to set of the space and light the make-up zone, while THAT amazing hanging chair delivers a complete chill out zone fit for even the fussiest teenager.
