From outdated cream brick to crisp, colourful and contemporary. That's the story of this Minted Interiors Dining Room coming to you from a 1980's beachside home in Geraldton on our West Australian Coastline.
When my clients Vanessa and Paul bought this property for their growing family, they knew they had big renovating plans to transform the build into a place that compliments their modern style and enhances the beachside lifestyle, that the amazing location has gifted them.
This whole home renovation is set to take place over a number of stages and after working with me on floor plans and overall style concepts for the property as a whole, a Dining Room makeover was the first renovation item on their checklist.
The project brief was was to create a contemporary, relaxed dining space where their family including two young boys - Lochie and Darcy - could enjoy family meals and snacks between beach stops.
This is the Minted Interiors design created to suit the brief, which was used as the final concept for the furniture, decor and installation selection. These digital design concepts are such a valuable planning tool to help you as our client visualise the possibilities of a space and allow you to tweak selections until you are completely thrilled with the final combination of fixtures, decor and furniture.
Updating the cream tile flooring in this section of the home is set to be one of the last stages of this renovation, so for this area it was important to make do with the current flooring and instead take the focus away from the outdated tiles.
To make an instant and significant change the cream brick walls were painted white and a panelled feature wall was installed to create interest and provide a hint of that seaside living, the beautiful beachside location inspires. The texture of each finish - brick and clad - create a contemporary earthiness in the space, along with beautiful subtle backdrop interest.
To me this simple wall and floor transformation is a great example of what you can achieve at home if YOU have cream brick walls and cream floor tiles. Never a lost cause!! Simple changes like paint and strategically placed rugs can have the hugest impact.
Vanessa, Paul and their boys have an amazing energy about them and when working on their personal interior style brief, it became clear to me that I needed to capture a particular vitality in this room, to reflect the upbeat personalities and gorgeous style of this family. This provided the perfect starting inspiration for the furniture and decor choices - including this incredible Australian Limited Edition Prudence Caroline Print "Mauve Your Ass" via Greenhouse Interiors - available from Minted Interiors.
This piece has a particular energy to it - the movement of the paint form and colour inspire feeling and spirit, which brings powerful life, interest and vibrancy to the space.
This home has lovely high ceilings so I knew that I wanted to show them off by including some beautiful over sized pendant lights in the design. These stunning Danish designed Norman Copenhagen Bell Pendants from Surrounding bring a modern Scandi vibe to the space, draw your eye to the height of those beautiful ceilings and provide great practical task lighting for meal time.
These beautiful timber and leather chairs by Uniqwa Furniture via Empire are a stunning design, reflecting a beautiful and casual contemporary style which works perfectly with this Ethnicraft dining table and Hector bench seat - all available through Minted Interiors.
Although a stunning quality and very sturdy, these chairs require relative care given their woven cream leather seats, so we introduced an easy to wipe clean bench seat on one side of the table for the kids to use during mealtimes.
The Hexagon Wall Planter garden by Obliqca selected for this project creates a beautiful feature for the cladded wall. It also provides the perfect way to introduce greenery into an unusually shaped room, while keeping the focal point away from the floor and the outdated tiles.
When I first set eyes on this room it had exposed cream brick walls and cream tiles, contributing to an outdated and dull atmosphere. The furniture and art selections didn't reflect the modern and style savvy family who live here, or provide a practical and usable space for their beachside lifestyle - all adding to the challenges of the redesign.
Some BEFORE and PROGRESS shots:
This project really shows what can be achieved in outdated spaces. If you have a little vision and the right help you can transform an outdated impractical interior (including cream brick and tile rooms!) into a contemporary beautiful setting, perfect for your family and lifestyle.
